DESIGNER: Michael Stanton
CONTRACTOR: Cahill Construction
CONTRACT: Competitive Bid
SQUARE FEET: 30,000

PROJECT SCOPE: The San Francisco ordinance for Unreinforced Masonry
buildings forced St Pauls School Building to close. St Pauls School was
relocated to a temporary location until the unreinforced masonry building could
be either seismically retrofitted or a new building could replace it. A
structural feasibility study was undertaken to determine the structural seismic
deficiencies and possible schemes for mitigation along with cost estimates for
each option including a new building. The decision was made to tear down the
old structure and erect a new building.
A new three-story building for a single grade school with offices and
gymnasium was erected on the site of the old school reusing the old basement walls
and foundations.
ROLE: Owners Representative. Coordinated and managed the
feasibility study. Supervised all phases of construction. Design review.
Quality control. Contractor selection and bidding. Change order control.
